What is endometrial cancer and who gets it?
Endometrium is the lining of the womb or uterus and therefore endometrial cancer is a disease that affects this region of a woman’s body. It results from abnormal cell growth (such as a malignant tumor) and has the potential to enter the circulatory or lymph system – allowing it to travel into other areas of the body and cause further damage.
Women who are obese or overweight have a higher risk of developing endometrial cancer. A number of common symptoms of this disease include abnormal bleeding from the vagina that is disassociated with any menstrual period cycle.
Link between coffee & endometrial cancer
Endometrial cancer affects approximately 1/37 American women over the span of their lives and is the most commonly diagnosed cancer that occurs in the female reproductive system. It has been discovered through research and studies that drinking of more than 2 cups of coffee a day can reduce the chances of developing this form of cancer by up to 1/5.
Although further tests and research is needed to confirm the exact reasoning behind this correlation, it is thought that the naturally occurring ingredients present in coffee beans have a positive effect on a woman’s body which reduces the production and levels of the hormone known as estrogen. Especially in women who are post-menopausal, the imbalance or excess production of this hormone has been linked to increasing the risks of developing cancers and endometrial cancer is a disease included by this suggestion.
Other ways of reducing endometrial cancer risk
Despite the complete prevention of endometrial cancer, there are numerous lifestyle changes and adjustments that can be made in order to reduce the risk of developing this serious health complication.
1. Being of a healthy weight – Especially in the case of post-menopausal women, being overweight can lead to an increased risk of developing endometrial cancer. This is because at this point in a woman’s life, estrogen is produced using fatty body tissue, rather than being produced in the ovaries. An increase or imbalance in the body’s hormones can consequently increase your risk of developing cancer.
2.Reduce the consumption of animal fat in your diet – Studies have proven that women who consume a lot of animal derived, saturated fats are at a higher risk of developing endometrial cancer. Unsaturated, vegetable fats can be eaten instead and promote a healthier heart and circulatory system, as well as aiding fat loss.
3. Taking pills for birth control – This has also been linked to a reduction of risk in terms of endometrial cancer development, especially over prolonged periods of time.
