Labor is the regular rhythmic contractions of the uterus required for normal vaginal delivery of a baby. These are well coordinated and are induced by a hormone known as oxytocin. These contractions usually start 8 to 12 hours before delivery and are painful for the mother.
How to induce labor- Fact vs. Fiction!
In many a women, there may be some delay in starting labor. There are cases when the baby is at term, but the mother doesn’t experience uterine contractions. If you are worried that you might be the next to experience this, then the following tips are for you. These tips can help you induce labor:
1. Spicy meal
Spicy meals are not associated with labor induction. You may thick that eating a spicy meal may somehow jump-start your digestive system that in turn will stimulate the uterus, but unfortunately it is not true. The digestive system is not at all connected to the uterus in any way. Therefore, spicy food cannot induce labor.
2. Watching a sad movie
Some women believe that watching a sad movie and crying over it helped them in their labor. They claim that when they were past their due date, some sad movie came to their rescue. This method is however not proven scientifically. There may be some hormonal changes linked to the change in the emotional state of the mother which led to labor.
Walking has been effective in inducing labor and has been opted by many women who await labor. When you walk, the baby inside your uterus rotates so that his head comes to lie near your pelvis. The pressure of the head of the baby near the lower part of the uterus then triggers labor.
4. Having Sex
This might be the last thing you might think of to induce labor when you are 40 weeks pregnant, but it might help. It has been proposed that having sex may cause relaxation of muscles due to orgasm and helps in the process of labor.
5. Nipple stimulation
Massaging and twisting the nipples causes the release of oxytocin, a hormone which stimulates labor. This maneuver may, however, prolong the uterine contractions.
