Black Men’s Health Clinic® (BMHC) Founder and CEO, Larry Wallace Sr., participated in a stimulating discussion about health justice as a panelist at The Power of S.H.E. Mini Summit, sponsored by the ladies of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Alpha Kappa Zeta Chapter.

Mr. Wallace discussed the core philosophy of BMHC. He emphasized how a single negative experience can deter individuals from seeking care and sharing their concerns within their communities. Therefore, building and maintaining trust is crucial for ensuring that people not only return but also feel comfortable recommending BMHC services to others.

He also highlighted BMHC’s focus on navigation and coordination, beginning with a deep understanding of each individual’s needs, and our organization’s comprehensive approach, which includes addressing mental health, physical health, and social determinants of health. The BMHC approach is designed to support individuals throughout their lives, fostering a long-lasting relationship based on trust and accessibility.

Mr. Larry underscored the company’s commitment to removing barriers to care and ensuring financial constraints don’t hinder access. Whether individuals have insurance or lack financial resources altogether, we strive to provide care without judgment or financial strain.

He also highlighted the importance of “warm handoffs” in the healthcare navigation referral process. Unlike simply passing along a referral, BMHC ensures a smooth transition to other services, understanding that individuals may be fearful because of previous experiences or anxious about the cost of care.

Larry Wallace Sr. spoke about the BMHC experience, “So, we make sure that men get where they need to go because they can get distracted or they’re scared. A lot of times they come in that there’s a lot of fear. Many times they worry about money… [but] if you come into our space, “We Got You.” If you have insurance, we’ll take it. If you’re on MAP [the Medical Access Program insurance program], great. If you don’t have a dime and you come to our place, “We Got You.” And so, we remove all the barriers.”

Lastly, Mr. Larry underscored the value of having a diverse staff trained as community health workers. By bringing fresh perspectives to the table, the BMHC team helps break down stereotypes and offer more empathetic and effective care.

BMHC is “Care You Can Trust.”
