How Unconscious Bias in Healthcare Impacts Black Women’s Health: Delays in Diagnosis & Solutions

Unconscious bias in healthcare has a devastating impact on Black women’s health, often leading to delays in diagnosis and misdiagnosis. In this video, I share my personal story of how unconscious bias delayed my diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis and Sjögren’s syndrome and highlight why this issue is so prevalent in healthcare systems today. I also dive into the research behind autoimmune diseases, their disproportionate impact on women (especially Black women), and the critical role of healthcare providers in recognizing and addressing bias.

As Black women continue to face systemic barriers in healthcare, providers must understand how their biases can affect outcomes. I’ll explain how you can change your practice to provide more inclusive, equitable care for Black women and improve patient trust.
